The library wants kids to curl up with a good book – and then put it down and move around.
The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is partnering with the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon and the Nutrition Council to help kids “Be Smart, Eat Well and Move More” with a “Hog Log” program.
The pilot fitness program will take off from seven urban library branches beginning Feb. 4. A launch party will take place at 2 p.m. that day at the Main Library’s Children’s Learning Center at Ninth and Vine streets with pig-themed games for the family, a Flying Pig mascot race, prizes and healthy refreshments.
Through May 5, kids ages 5-12 are invited to keep track of the distances they move, the healthy food choices they make and the time they spend exercising their brains with the library by logging their efforts on the Flying Pig Kids Marathon “Hog Log,” available at seven library locations and online at www.flyingpigmarathon.com.
The Kids Marathon allows kids to finish the 26.2 miles of a marathon in incremental steps, a half-mile or a mile, throughout the weeks leading up to the Flying Pig Kids Marathon on May 5. Along the way, programming and incentives will be provided to help kids learn more about the impact of building healthy lifestyles while motivating them to complete their Hog Logs. Kids who cross the Hog Log finish line will receive Flying Pig T-shirts and medals.
